France’s interior minister announced on 7 October that police would temporarily stop using stun grenades at high-school protests after a pupil lost a hand in Lens. The devices shock and disorient crowds; the suspension is confined to school protests. It will last until the Lens incident is clarified, while the circumstances of the pupil’s injury remain disputed.
A Russian missile hit an apartment block in Pryluky, northern Ukraine, on 7 October, collapsing the building and trapping residents. Ukraine’s emergency service reported 19 deaths as rescuers searched the wreckage, while police recorded damage to surrounding homes. The count remains provisional: rescue work was still continuing in the emergency service’s 7 October update.
The European Commission paid €1.24 billion to Ukraine on 7 October for drones, interceptors, ammunition and missiles made by Ukrainian producers. The money comes from the defence part of the EU’s €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, to fund purchases and strengthen local manufacturing. Further payments are planned, but remain subject to agreed conditions and monitoring.
